Take 2 caramels and squish them together into a flat rectangle about 1/2 inch thick. If they're too firm, pop them in the microwave for 5 seconds. Do this with all your caramels and put them aside.

Put your chocolate chips and shortening in a bowl. Melt them together using a double boiler or your microwave at half power. Keep stirring until it's all smooth.

Dump the rice cereal into your melted chocolate and mix well until everything's coated.

Take each caramel rectangle and cover it with the crunchy chocolate mix. A fork works best - dip each piece and then run it along the bowl edge to get rid of extra chocolate.

Lay your chocolate-covered treats on waxed paper. They'll need about 1-2 hours to harden before you can eat them.
